Welcome

2014-2015 Annual Report

SCROLL DOWN

Welcome

2014-2015 Annual Report

WHAT IS A #JAHERO?

You don't need superpowers to be a hero. You just need to care. And, during the 2014-2015 school year, that's exactly what you did. Some of you gave your time and energy as volunteers in the classroom, at JA Finance Park®, and at your workplaces through unforgettable job shadow experiences, while others contributed to our mission by investing dollars that make a real, measurable difference for District, Maryland, and Virginia youth.

You sent a powerful message to the young people in Greater Washington that you believe in their ability to be financially capable and tenacious. You believe in their futures... and all the things they will one day achieve in their careers. You have helped further emphasize that the skills and concepts taught in Junior Achievement® programs are concepts that we, as a society, cannot to afford to overlook in our school systems. We have a vested interest in ensuring that our young people are more prepared than ever to take on the challenges of an increasingly complex world with fervor and confidence. By investing in our programs you can rest assured knowing you have done your part to complete this preparation.

It takes just one, generous donor to provide the means necessary to unveil a world of possibilities to JA participants.  And it takes just one, passionate volunteer to ignite a new sense of hope within these children. We would like to thank you for stepping up to the plate this year and helping to show over 55,000 of our region's kids the possibility of what they can do if they work hard.

Because of your generous contributions and time, you have helped JA® take another step toward our goal of giving this generation unparalleled hope for the future and the skills to turn their dreams into reality. Superpowers or not, you’re a hero in our eyes.

THANK YOU.

Why JA®?

In a rapidly evolving and increasingly complex economy, too many of our students are left without the fundamental 21st century skills to thrive in their future careers and families. A recent survey reveals 40 percent of college seniors fail to graduate with the complex reasoning skills needed in today’s workplace. And, a majority of Americans lack the basic personal finance skills to manage their finances and futures, often just one paycheck away from disaster.

Even in the most powerful city in the world— with an unrivaled concentration of highly educated professionals and influence— we are not immune. A shocking 10,000 low-income youth in the District are out of school and out of work. And in surrounding counties of Prince George’s, Montgomery, and Fairfax, almost 200,000 students qualify for free and reduced meals. Studies show that students living in poverty do not have career aspirations or realize they can work toward a career; they lack the hope that so many educators agree is critical to their future success.

We have a responsibility and a collective interest to transform the preparedness of these youth and their hope for WHAT’S
POSSIBLE from a mission into a sweeping regional movement. And together, WE CAN move their futures forward.

Greater Washington must set an example— and lead the rest of the nation— in creating forward-thinking solutions to ensure our young people have the vision to dream big, and the relevant skills to work hard and find success.

We have the ability to inspire this generation to be better prepared for success than any generation in history. By harnessing the power of nonprofit, business, and education, we can unleash a movement in Greater Washington to transform lives and move the future of our region’s competitiveness and the future of our kids, forward.

Junior Achievement of Greater Washington works tirelessly with our partners and volunteer role models from the community to inspire a generation to be financially capable, tenacious, and equipped with the tools to manage risk effectively, welcome opportunity, and succeed in the modern economy. Through our innovative, hands-on financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship programs we build a ladder from the classroom to the future to put and end to a culture of financial illiteracy and a 21st century skills gap that has prevented too many of our region's students from realizing their full potential.

WE'RE WORKING TO GIVE THIS GENERATION AN UNPARALLELED SENSE OF HOPE FOR THEIR FUTURES.

A recent Gallup study recently revealed that key to a student's engagement in their career later in life is whether they had a role model during their life as a student. Our #JAHero volunteers come from all walks of life. And, they're what set Junior Achievement® apart. Our volunteer role models from across the region bring JA's financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship lessons to life, sharing their own stories about their finances, school life, and search for a career along the way.

And, it's good for our region's companies. 97% of JA® volunteers gained more respect for their employer because of its involvement with Junior Achievement®.
